Old Man Winter is certainly no one to be messed with. Year after year, the sun tilts and wobbles as it dances circles around the sun, driving the seasons. I am certainly someone who has to be in the mood for winter. Believe it or not, I don’t appreciate it every year. Sometimes, I hope for an endless summer whereas other times I wish for winter to come early this year. It all depends. There are just some years where I simply do not want to be bothered with the season at all. Although my climate isn’t the coldest around, it certainly does have its moments. But, regardless, there is something special about curling up in some chilly blankets inside a warm house. Living in the South, many homes lack heaters or have very old and inefficient ones. Speaking personally, our heater is built into the air conditioner unit. Each year, we fire it up to burn the dust off the coils and get everything nice and warmed up for the season. There’s something nostalgic about that burning smell the first time you get those coils cranking. With the correct HVAC system, you can enjoy a comfortable house year round. Having difficulties maintaining heat in your home? Be sure to check for drafts and old insulation. The goal is to retain what’s in the environment, whether that is heating or cooling.

Winter in the south   Smart thermostat

Autumn is one of my personal favorite times of the year. It’s a beautiful transitional period between the harsh heat of summer and the bitter cold of the winter. Depending on where you live, autumn also provides an excellent time to prepare for the coming months’ weather conditions. In the majority of the United States, consistent and reliable heating is as important a necessity as food and water. Ensuring your heating system is up-to-date and ready for the most extreme conditions is the difference between a cozy holiday season and a news headline. Air conditioning has become a dependable luxury that most have taken for granted. Thermostat care is perhaps the most important starting point. Regardless of your level of expertise in running serious home heating equipment, there’s about a 100% chance you will interact with a thermostat. While mechanical repair and inspection is a component of home heating best left to professionals, testing a thermostat is something anyone with internet access can do. Once the thermostat has been evaluated to the extent of one’s ability, have a professional come inspect the entirety of the unit for any defects, damages, or anything else that requires repair in order to ensure proper function of the unit. By being proactive about heating, we greatly reduce our chances of a winter emergency during the harshest parts of the season. A little bit of hard work now will pay off in the long run. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your comfort.

Winter time is the worst Cooling specialist

One of the biggest and most often overlooked benefits of floor heating is uniform heating. Heating through more traditional forced-air heating systems often results in cold spots as heated air struggles to extend far beyond its starting point in any given space. With floor heating, heat is evenly dispersed throughout the room. This is economical as a lower temperature overall can feel much more comfortable compared to the higher temperature settings needed to quell cold spots and drafts through traditional vented means. Money saving and technical jargon aside, floor heating provides a comfort not traditionally associated with air conditioning—noise. Traditional heating systems are well known for being uncomfortably loud, to the point where the white noise associated with their use can affect overall one’s comfort in the home. Speaking from experience, I became so accustomed to the constant noise level generated by my home air conditioning system, I found myself jumping awake whenever it shut off at night. This is something completely eliminated through floor heating systems as they are practically silent. The loud, jarring sounds of a bulky unit kicking on followed by air rushing through vents is completely eliminated. Even if you are particularly sensitive to sounds, any noise generated by a floor heating system will typically only last 30 to 60 minutes, since this is how long most systems take to heat up, as opposed to traditional heating systems which need to turn on and off periodically throughout the day to maintain a consistent temperature.

After years of working for someone else in the HVAC business, my friend Joe decided he would go into the business himself. He had learned all of the ins and outs of heating and cooling installation, service, repair and even refurbishment. He also understood the financial aspects of running a business since he’d had to effectively manage and run his boss’s business when the owner would leave town for family and other obligations. Finally, Joe had also developed a reputation in town for being an excellent HVAC technician and had something of a “following” among the businesses whose HVAC systems he serviced on a regular basis. So, with all of his technical, business and cultural experience working in the HVAC industry, Joe decided to start an HVAC business of his own. They say that everyone’s dream is to be their own boss. This was certainly true for Joe who, though he worked well with his boss, began to feel the urge to spread his wings and take the business in different directions after twenty years of service. But independence wasn’t the only thing Joe was looking for. Joe’s primary motivation was family. Joe has two children, Molly and Joe Jr., and, like many parents, Joe wanted to leave something for them. Building a successful HVAC business and teaching Molly and little Joe all about it–just as Joe’s boss and mentor had taught him–seemed like the best thing Joe could do for his kids. So, about three years ago, Joe opened his own HVAC service and repair business and he’s never looked back.

New technology on the market     Mini split air conditioner

Winter is my least favorite season. It’s cold, it’s dark and it’s messy. Beginning in December, my furnace never shuts down. It runs all day and all night and my utility bill goes through the roof. The air in my house gets dank and heavy. Worst of all, my skin dries out and my lips get chapped. Last year, however, I decided it was time to get a new HVAC system since the old system wasn’t only inefficient, loud and old, but was also starting to make me sick. I called a friend who used to work as an HVAC technician for advice. Since my house is small, he recommended a small, but high quality heating and cooling system for the bedroom. He did not think it was necessary to install a central heating and cooling system given the size and location of my house– and the fact that I was on a fairly tight budget. He showed me a variety of heating and cooling systems. Some had remote controls while others were very old fashioned and had to be turned on and off manually. Some of the higher-tech systems turned on and off automatically in response to even slight shifts in the temperature or humidity. The most impressive HVAC system connected right to an app on a user’s cell phone that “spoke” directly to the HVAC in response to weather forecasts and other information inputs. It was called “the Premier Twenty-First Century HVAC System–The Last HVAC System You’ll Ever Need!” I was very impressed with it, though it was far more than I was looking for. In the end, I bought a small, but high quality HVAC system for my back bedroom and threw my old system out. I feel much better!

Working for myself Propane boiler

After finishing school, I moved up North. I got a job managing an animal shelter during the week and making baked goods during the weekend. I was always busy and, after September until about May, I was always cold. After a couple of years of sticking it out, I decided to invest in a highly sophisticated HVAC system for both my home and my car. It was the best decision I ever made. I began by doing some research on HVAC systems, heating and cooling, HVAC technicians and HVAC companies. I explored the heating and cooling systems available at all of the local hardware stores. I asked friends, neighbors and customers what kind of heating and cooling systems they use, if they rely on an HVAC technician and, most importantly, how much they pay to keep things up and running smoothly. After doing my research, I decided that if I really wanted to have the best temperature control, I needed to go with the professionals and not try to locate and install a system myself. So I found a local heating and cooling company and asked if they had the make, model and year HVAC system I was looking for. I also inquired about their HVAC technicians and requested that their most experienced technician install my system. Since I was making such a significant investment, I wanted things done right. About a day after my visit with the HVAC company, George showed up at my house with the HVAC system I had purchased and had it installed in less than an hour. I’d see George every six months or so when he would come by to service my system. A typical service job would take no more than thirty minutes. About my car: I decided to buy a new one with remote temperature control and heated seats!

Winter is just the worst Heating and cooling service

I recently learned about an interrogation technique developed by psychologists to elicit confessions. It’s called “ice-boxing,” and it’s quite simple. An interviewee is placed in a very cold room for about thirty minutes before the interview takes place. Typically, the temperature in the room is set to about fifty-two degrees Fahrenheit. This is done through precise air-conditioning controls. The subject is also to sit directly below the air-conditioning vent so that the cool air blows right on his or her body. The subject shouldn’t move too much during this time since the extra body heat produced from movement could counter the effects of the extreme air-conditioning; the idea is to cool the subject into alertness, which, according to the theory behind the experiment, prevents deception. After about half an hour of still sitting in the cool room, the interviewer should enter and prepare to question the subject. The interviewer should be older than the subject and should exhibit some authority in his or her position. Police officers in uniform, medical doctors in white coats, lawyers in suits are all suitable authority figures. Men are preferable to women and men of higher stature are preferable to men of smaller stature. The interviewer should offer the subject a curt, firm greeting and provide a cup of ice-cold water. The interviewer should insist with some force that the subject drink the water before the interview begins. As the interview begins, the air-conditioning should be lowered further to about forty-eight degrees Farhenheit. The room should feel frigid. The air streaming from the air-conditioning system shouldn’t be forceful, however. It should just be extremely cool. At this point, the subject should be uncomfortable, but alert and ready to talk.

My family and I traveled overseas for the first time when I was twelve. We traveled throughout the southern hemisphere by plane, train, and automobile. It was hot everywhere we went and only a few of the hotels had central air-conditioning. I wasn’t sure why my parents opted to stay at cheap hostels and furnished apartments since none of them were particularly comfortable. They were all cooled by small fans or window air-conditioners. And they were all rather dank and had the smell of old cooking. Many guests had passed through them before we did, that was for sure. They all looked lived-in, but not in the kind of way you might expect of permanent residents. They were run-down and trodden upon. They were like old shoes that had once been nice, but that no one cared about anymore. But on the second to last stop of our trip, we stayed at an old-world style hotel that had been completely renovated. It felt old and new at the same time, like a castle remade from the inside out. When we walked in from the heat outside, we could hear the soft humming of the air-conditioner blowing cool, crisp air throughout the marble and granite interior. Our room had its own temperature control system; the air-conditioning unit was located just out of sight behind a thin curtain next to the closet. The front-desk personnel let us know that an air-conditioning technician had just serviced our unit and that everything was in tip-top shape and ready for us to enjoy. And we certainly did since the temperature outside reached into the three-digits even before noon! The only complaint we had about our stay was that it sometimes got too cool. The air-conditioning was so efficient that we had to turn it off at night. By morning, however, we would be burning up again and were glad to switch the system on again. It felt like an arctic breeze in the middle of July. It was wonderful. I’ll never forget that last stay. I did also catch a cold from all of the temperature changes though.

The produce section of the grocery store must always be set to the perfect temperature–never too hot or too cold. In order to keep everything fresh, the produce section must be kept at sixty-nine degrees Fahrenheit at all times. The humidity level must also be kept below a dew point of forty nine. The air conditioning in produce sections must therefore be very precise. The HVAC units in produce sections are set to be sensitive to any changes in temperature or humidity and will reset automatically if there are any variations in the interior environment. Some common triggers for HVAC reset include rain, high outdoor temperature or humidity levels, crowding in the store, high store traffic, and even movement of workers in the produce section. There are many reasons why the air must be precisely conditioned in produce sections. Of course, fresh produce is perishable and one way to maintain produce freshness is to ensure that the produce section is kept at optimum temperature and humidity levels. Freshness also ensures a longer shelf life and improves sales numbers since freshness is one of the primary criteria shoppers look for when buying produce. Produce that isn’t sold at optimum freshness levels has to be thrown away or composted. Sanitation is another reason temperatures need to be precisely controlled in produce sections. Higher temperatures promote the growth of bacteria and mold, both of which can cause severe illness in both workers and consumers. Finally, many produce managers are keen to ensure optimum working conditions for workers. Businesses requiring high levels of physical activity on the part of workers must be well-air conditioned so that workers do not get overheated while stocking or unloading goods. HVAC technicians must therefore regularly service the air-conditioning units of grocery stores, and they must pay special attention to the temperature controls in produce sections.

“No air-conditioning, heating, or furnace for me,” she’d protest if anyone brought it up. “And I certainly don’t want a television!” She claimed to hate television above all else. She thought it “warped our minds” and “crushed our souls.” She might have been right about that, but we didn’t want to hear it at the time. Of course, television is outdated now. We understood her aversion to some technology, but we didn’t understand why she insisted on keeping her cottage so hot in the summer and so cold in the winter. It would have been simple enough to install a small HVAC unit that would cool and heat at least one room in the small house. We pointed out that she wouldn’t even need to hire an HVAC technician to set it up since dad could easily do it himself. We even found one very affordable HVAC unit at the local hardware store that fit the exact measurements of her bedroom window. It didn’t matter. Aunt Roe wasn’t having any of it. “Do you think your ancestors had air conditioners and heaters?” she’d ask us. “Of course they didn’t! They didn’t have no air conditioners or heaters! They were tough, hardy folks, and I intend to live out my days like them!” Aunt Roe was set in her ways. Her physical comfort was connected to her belief system, which was very anti-physical comforts. She didn’t believe in air-conditioners, heaters, televisions, or computers. She believed in “being tough” and “living in sync with the natural world.” She didn’t seem to have a problem with automobiles though, which we thought was strange. She did refuse to have the car’s air conditioner and heater fixed, however. Apparently, cars were the only technology Aunt Roe didn’t think made people “soft.”
