When my family decided to take in a foreign exchange student I knew that it might not be such a good idea.
From where she was from I knew that the cultural difference might be hard for her to become comfortable with.
In the first few months of hosting the new temporary member of the family were pretty rough. Along with a long list of different things we found out that she was not a fan of air conditioning at all. They didn’t have a/c where she was from, and during the night the sound from the a/c unit turning on would drive her crazy. Any time that she would come home from school and walk into the home where the air conditioning was running she would instantly complain about how cold and uncomfortable she felt and even start to consider heading back home. I had never had to go without a/c in my entire life, so when my parents thought it would be a good idea to give up a/c for the rest of the warm season I knew that it would be hard. It was just as hard as I had imagined that it would be, but In a way we were able to bond with our feelings of discomfort and would always complain to one another. We are all hoping that the next few months will go much smoother and she will get over her a/c fears finally. Because trust me, Going without a/c for an entire summer is something that you wouldn’t want to wish on your worst enemy.
