A cold that most heating units can't handle

Last winter put our heating system to the ultimate test.

Luckily, I have always been the kind of furnace owner that has been proactive in ensuring that all manner of preventative maintenance is done on my unit long before I have a real need for it.

I never have extensive furnace maintenance done any later than September. I urge my family and friends to do the same, but for the most part, they don’t need much encouragement. They don’t mess around when it comes to protecting their families with adequate heating during the worst of the winter either! It can be a matter of life and death in some areas. I believe this was never more true for our community than last winter. Sometimes, the windshield brought the real feel temperature to -50 degrees! This was the kind of cold that even our robust heating units were not meant to face. We definitely had to bump our normal temperature up at least four degrees. I and my family were also very careful about opening exterior doors and did everything we could to keep the heat inside the house where it belongs! I was also very grateful that I had our home weather-stripped about a year ago to prevent the escape of heat and the invasion of the cold. Even with these preventative measures it was exceptionally cold. We bundled up in several extra layers with thick socks and slippers. You can bet we didn’t go outside for pretty much anything! Yet, our heating unit managed to create a relatively comfortable environment while we weathered the winter storm!
