A few weeks ago, I started to notice an odd smell inside of my house. When I couldn’t locate the source of the odor, I thought I was going crazy. The smell seemed to dissipate into the air, and I forgot for a few days. Last weekend, the terrible smell was back again. I sprayed Febreeze all over the house, but the terrible smell was still lingering in the air. I tried my best to pinpoint the cause of the odor, but it seemed to be coming out of our air vents. When I turn off the HVAC system, I couldn’t smell anything in the air. I decided it was a good time to contact our HVAC supplier. I heard horror stories in the past, about animals dying inside of the HVAC ducting. I hope this was not the cause of the smell in my house. Yesterday, the HVAC technician showed up to look into the problem. With the air conditioner running, the technician could smell the same terrible odor that I was referring to. The HVAC technician went into the Attic, in order to view all of the HVAC ducting. He was in the attic for a long time, before he came down to deliver the bad news. A raccoon had found its way into the attic, and made a small bed next to the HVAC ducting. The raccoon had made a nest out of our Christmas wreath. All of the animal feces had built up in the attic, which was the culprit of the lingering smell. I had to contact an exterminator, once the HVAC problems were addressed.
