I was really interested in finding different ways to make my home more energy efficient. I really wanted to be able to make my furnace and my air conditioning run more efficiently so I could cut some of my energy costs. I found out that one of the best ways to improve energy efficiency is by adding insulation. I already have rolled insulation, but overtime, rolled insulation loses its abilities to control energy waste. Environmental factors cause the insulation to harden and lose its effectiveness. Moisture, and even mice can cause the rolled insulation to deteriorate. I was reading about blown insulation. It is environmentally friendly because it is made of recycled materials. It is smaller particles that are blown into the walls, ceiling and crawl spaces, through a large hose the looks like a vacuum cleaner in reverse. The small particles are able to settled into even the tiniest of crevices in the home. Another big plus of the blown insulation is that I don’t have to deal with large messes, which is a big problem with the rolled insulation. Our blown insulation is moisture resistant and it helps to keep mold from forming. It is less likely for odors to permeate into the house, or for rotting of wood to occur. I’ve seen a big difference in our energy bills, and I am happy with the outcome of the new insulation. The biggest perk is that the blown insulation also work as a noise barrier and I don’t have to hear my daughters rap music all day and night.
