I was looking into putting radiant heating into my house. I called the HVAC company and I asked them to come in and give me some pricing. He was talking about electric radiant floor heating. He talked about thermostats. He talked so much that I had to stop him in mid sentence. I told him that I just wanted an estimate to install it. I already knew what I wanted, and I had a boiler in my basement. I just wanted radiant heated flooring in the bathrooms and in the garage. He stopped and stared at me like I was crazy. I found out later that he was new and he was just spouting the entirety of what he had learned in school. They thought that it was best to send the new HVAC techs out to talk about the different systems and to work on the estimate. It was an experienced HVAC technician that would come out, possibly with the trainee and do the work. I wasn’t so confused then. When the young man showed up the next time, I sat down with him. Before he began, I put up my hand, like I would with my own children. I told him that he needed to slow down, and I explained about our boiler and how I just wanted to have the pipes laid under the bathroom floor and have it connected to the boiler. He stuttered and then looked embarrassed. He told us that he didn’t know a lot about the estimating for radiant heated flooring, and I thought he was going to cry. We hired him for the job.
