I when I was a little, I used to love to play all sorts of games of pretend. I would build forts with blankets and pillows and it was a blast being young. I remember that one day, I was messing with this turny-thing on the wall that looked like fun. I was pretending I was the captain of a ship and was taking the helm. This thing on the wall was the thermostat and I was really messing it up. I ended up turning the temperature settings really low and it became frigid inside of the house. I was wondering why it was so chilly, and before I knew it, my dad was shouting about who messed with the thermostat. When he asked me about it, I had no clue what the thermostat was and asked about that. He told me it was the unit that controls the heating and cooling system for the house. I said I was playing with it like it was a ship’s wheel, and he softened his voice a little bit. He was gentle, because he realized that I really didn’t know what it was or what it was meant for, after all, he had never told me before so how would I know? He showed me how the thermostat worked and then said to make sure not to mess with it or the house would get uncomfortable. We wanted the temperature to stay just right at 72 degrees. I agreed that the house always felt cozy at that setting, but I never thought that we were able to heat and cool the house by adjusting this small device.
