Every year while in the rough winter season weather, my child swims for the county youth swim team! They regularly have their practices at the YMCA because there is a heated pool inside. The heated pool is a fantastic place for my child to swim and meet friends, especially when there is ice plus snow on the ground outdoors. Before our local YMCA opened, it was too chilly to swim while in the winter… Plus my child simply could not swim on an intramural team because we just didn’t have an indoor heated pool close enough to our home. So when the YMCA opened a few years ago, the three of us joined immediately just for the heated pool. My child has swim meets every Tuesday; this last Tuesday was a massive debacle. The outdoor temperatures were easily chilly plus excruciatingly freezing… I almost stayed home, because the roads were just so treacherous. When the three of us arrived to the YMCA, hordes of parents were gathered in the front lobby. They were complaining about the broken heater. Apparently the gas furnace wasn’t actually working in the pool area, so even though the pool was heated to a warm 90 degrees, the temperatures inside the room were only a frigid 56. The children could not function with temperatures so low without getting ill, so many parents were already complaining about that possibility with this gas furnace problem. I didn’t want to make things worse myself so I asked a buddy if the gas furnace would be fixed before the meet. They replied with a firm no. At that point, I decided to take my wife and my child home. Since I didn’t want to leave our cozy house from the beginning, the broken gas furnace was the perfect reason to finally leave. When my child saw his buddy leaving too, he didn’t protest at all. The three of us went to closest diner for hot pancakes instead.
