When I was a little girl, I would always see my father going off to work as an HVAC repairman, and I knew I wanted to be just like him. I loved seeing him in his official uniform every morning before he left the house. At dinner, I ate up all of his stories from his work day. It didn’t take my father long to realize my love for his career. Just before my high school graduation, he decided to sit down with me so we could talk a little more about it. His main point of the conversation was spent preparing me for some of the treatment I might get as a female in the HVAC field. Most of the HVAC techs out there are male, so I would be in the minority. I made a promise to him that day that I wouldn’t let any of those negative opinions get to me while I developed my career. I couldn’t help but tear up a little when we hugged and he told me how proud he was of me. Before we even had that talk, I knew it was going to be a bit of a challenge to be a woman in a heavily male field like HVAC repair. I am certain I can do the job just as well as anyone, if not better. I hope that someday I am in high demand as an HVAC repair tech, and a little girl sees me at work and hopes she can do the same thing when she grows up.
