Training for the small school

I am the superintendent for a fairly small school system in the northeastern area of the country.

For the vast majority of the semester, the weather is chilly, rainy, snowy & downright brutal! There is no other choice really but to spend the majority of time indoors. The young children become far more sedentary. They tend to rest in front of cable TV & kindle screens, and despite attending gym class, our students were not getting nearly enough exercise. We’ve taken measures to enhance the nutritional value of the food all of us provide & items available in the vending machines, however most children bring their own snacks to school. I frequently spot children eating cookies, candy, cupcakes & donuts. They respectfully drink soft drinks with their meals also. The majority of our students are seriously overweight & at risk of drastic health troubles! Unwilling to rest & do nothing, I tried educating the parents about proper nutrition. I offered night classes centered around nutritional counselling. I brought in a certified fitness trainer to speak to everyone & share information. At a single one of these meetings, a parent asked about offering group fitness classes to the students as a crucial part of an after-school program. I wasn’t entirely sure how a well this free program would be taken in by the children. I was really shocked when all of us had such a high enrollment in the fitness program that all of us needed to break up the children by age. All of us now have a personal trainer providing a fitness class after-school several days a week. The children easily show up in the gym & participate in all sorts of odd exercises. I am truly hoping to continue this fitness program & possibly expand it.
